Synergy Rocks!

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Ok, so I am sure that many in my industry may already know about Synergy since it’s been in development for many years but I just learned about it yesterday.

Synergy

Synergy is a service that runs on a PC, Linux or a Mac and allows you to use one keyboard and mouse to literally jump screens between any of the systems. You can even copy/paste text between them all. And it does all this without the need for a KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switch, which can be kind of expensive.

I am currently running 4 LCDs on 2 systems. I am using my XP box as the server and to the left of it I have a HTPC (Home Theater PC) running Windows Media Center 2005 (XP version until Win7 officially comes out). I’ve always had to have 2 keyboards and 2 mice hooked up in order to run them both because I refused to buy a KVM switch.

No more!

I can now use my primary Windows Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse and just go from one set of screens to the next. The HTPC does *not* need to screens so in the next few days I’ll be taking my Linux box (Ubuntu) and adding it into the mix on the 4th LCD and I’ll then be able to traverse over 4 screens and 3 operating systems without having to use more hardware than is absolutely necessary!

UPDATE: Adding Ubuntu to the mix was actually fairly easy. Once I got the app installed it was just a matter of creating a session that auto starts it when the OS boots up and wallah, 4 screens, 3 OS and 1 Keyboard and Mouse.

LASIK

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

So as many of you may or may not already know I had a Lasik procedure done on my eyes this week. Monday afternoon at about 12:00 pm I was in the chair looking up at some very bright lights after having had multiple numbing drops put in my eyes. My mother (who drove me home from my appt, thank you mom) was in a chair near by because she was interested in seeing the procedure first-hand.

As the doctors began the procedure I was a bit nervous of course, but the Valium they gave me helped to calm those nerves. After about 10 minutes the whole thing was done and I was given instructions for care and sent home.

Once home I did as told and slept from about 2pm till nearly 6pm with clear eye patches tapped to my face to keep from rubbing my eyes. the feeling right after surgery is similar to putting a contact in your eye that has a tear in it. Fairly annoying but not too uncomfortable. The tough part is that you are SUPER sensitive to light and the numbing drops makes it tough to really keep your eyes from watering.

Around 6:30pm Elise and the kids got home and I was awake enough to hang out with them and eat some dinner. At about 9 or so everyone was in bed and I took some Tylenol Simple Sleep since having a 3.5 hour nap was going to keep me from falling asleep again at 9:30pm. Woke up early Tuesday morning like any other day, helped Elise and the kids get off to school/work and I headed in to the doctor’s office for a 7:30am follow-up.

Driving down the highway in moderate traffic was a breeze and I was astonished by how incredibly clear everything was, even after only 16 or 17 hours since my surgery. Still a bit sensative to light I just made sure I had my sun glasses on and everything was great. My appointment took all of about 10 minutes and the doctor said I was currently seeing at 20/15 and that everything looked perfect. I scheduled my 1 week follow-up and was on my way home.

Since I had the day off I was able to really see how things in my new visual world (sans glasses or contacts) was like. I found myself looking around and trying to find signs far enough away that I couldn’t read them anymore and that was pretty tough. The rest of the day was like any other day with contacts and I felt completely normal.

I still have to sleep with the clear eye patches taped to my face. I find that the Tylenol Simply Sleep helps me sleep more comfortable with those on too but everything else is pretty much as it was before the surgery. The real advantage was when I realized I could put away my contact lens case and solution in the bathroom. Also, since my regular every-day glasses were originally Ray Ban sunglasses with clear prescription lenses in them I had the doctors office replace those lenses with the original sun glass lenses. I now have a very nice, brand-new pair of sun glasses too.

the lasting affects of the surgery are fairly minor. I have to put 3 sets of drops in my eyes for the next week 4 times a day. No physical exertion (no going to the gym or swimming) and no lifting more than 50 pounds (sorry Lily). After the first week I still can’t work out or go swimming but I can lift my little (big) girl again and I only have to continue with the regular artificial tears drops (down to 4 drops per day from 1 bottle). After 3 weeks I can again go to the gym, go swimming and do normal activities but still can’t rub my eyes, the last item on the check list. After 3-4 months my eyes should be fully healed and I can once again rub them (amazing how much such a simple activity like that is missed when you can’t do it).

Today (Wednesday) I was back at work sitting in front of a computer and just having to remind myself that the artificial tears are cheap compared to the priceless value of my eyes and to use them often. In addition I need to remember to step away form my monitors every 15-20 minutes and let my eyes focus on something other than the screens. Besides that, the light no longer bothers me, my sight is doing great and I tend to get less eye-ache since my vision isn’t being artificially corrected by contacts or glasses.

That’s about all there is to tell. I can’t wait to see how many other things I realize I was missing out on as the days, weeks and months progress with my new-found vision.

Comcast port blocking

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

So I’ve been in contact with my email host provider all morning trying to figure out why as of this morning I can’t send out email, they’re a great email host and always quick to respond.

We finally get to the point where we verified that everything is setup properly (of course it is, nothing has changed on my end in over a year). Finally the discussion about blocked ports arises and sure enough, it seems as though Comcast is now blocking port 25 for SMTP connections. So, I’ve changed it to port 2525 and everything seems to be working fine.

My question is this:
Was this change on Comcast’s end specific to my and my IP address or was this a blanket change that is affecting more people than just myself?

How can they justify just stopping traffic on port 25 without letting everyone know they are going to do it? I can’t even imagine how many people are pulling out their hair this morning because they can’t send out email and they have no idea why.

COME ON COMCAST – COMMUNICATION IS KEY!!

Lily’s First Loose Tooth!

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

I guess I’m a whole lot more excited than she is. She was afraid to say she had a loose tooth because she didn’t understand that it’s part of growing up and is supposed to happen. She had thought she did something wrong so we had to explain to her that it’s a good thing, it’s part of growing up and this is quite a big milestone!

We are pretty excited for her and we’ll keep everyone updated with news as the progresses.

Back to Work

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Glad to announce that mornings are now doable without the Vicodin. I took a few Advil instead and that seemed to do the trick without causing any light-headieness or other side-affects. Work was pretty productive and it felt good getting back into the swing of every day life.

That’s all for today.

Work decision

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Today’s Monday and I had to make a decision on what to do about work. I decided that it was in my best health interest to take another day at home but work for the first half of the day remotely.

This will allow be to get through the 400+ emails that are in my inbox as well as catchup with the rest of my team to see where everything is at. It will also let me try to get a Dr’s appt for recovery check-up if the doctor feels today is a good day to do it.

More later after I see how the day goes.

Surgery Recovery

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

For some reason I sometimes forget that there are important things in my life that are actually blog-worthy. So, sorry for not even typing about this earlier since this is one of those items.

On Tuesday, April 10, 2007 I went to Parker Adventist Hospital for surgery. I had a fairly advanced stage Inguinal Hernia in my right abdomen. During my exam the prior week (again, stuff blogs are made for) the doctor suggested we use the Laparoscopic method of repair since that allows for him to look at the left side as well and if it needs repairing they can do them both at the same time. I’m glad he made that suggestion because there was a small tear on the left side too and that was fixed as well.

For the last week I have been home recovering. Everything went as planned and it was a successful surgery. Recovery has been hard on my system as well as on my family. The kids have a tough time understanding why I can’t play with them as much as I used to, nor why I can’t pick them up. My youngest, 21 months old, really has a hard time with that. The worst part is that for the first week of recovery I can’t pick anything up. But for the next 4-6 weeks I can’t “lift” anything more than 20 pounds. I put “lift” in quotes because I have a feeling that even though my son is about 23 pounds, if he’s handed to me I can probably at least hold him for a bit and maybe carry him some.

Vicadin has also been a great companion. I am not one to ever have issues with reliance on a drug but for the last week it has made life very bearable, especially sleeping. Over the next week I will begin using it less and less. This shouldn’t be too hard since I am really only taking it when I know I’m not going to be at home or just before bed. Just being around the house doesn’t require it’s use much.

Tonight I also have another decision to make, whether to take one more day off of work or try to do an entire day away from home and in the office. I need to be sure that I can sit all day at my computer and still be effective (with walking and stretching breaks of course) or if another day at home with little to no activity would fair better for my recovery and comfort levels. We’ll just have to wait and see how today goes and see how I end up feeling.
