Synergy Rocks!

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Ok, so I am sure that many in my industry may already know about Synergy since it’s been in development for many years but I just learned about it yesterday.

Synergy

Synergy is a service that runs on a PC, Linux or a Mac and allows you to use one keyboard and mouse to literally jump screens between any of the systems. You can even copy/paste text between them all. And it does all this without the need for a KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switch, which can be kind of expensive.

I am currently running 4 LCDs on 2 systems. I am using my XP box as the server and to the left of it I have a HTPC (Home Theater PC) running Windows Media Center 2005 (XP version until Win7 officially comes out). I’ve always had to have 2 keyboards and 2 mice hooked up in order to run them both because I refused to buy a KVM switch.

No more!

I can now use my primary Windows Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse and just go from one set of screens to the next. The HTPC does *not* need to screens so in the next few days I’ll be taking my Linux box (Ubuntu) and adding it into the mix on the 4th LCD and I’ll then be able to traverse over 4 screens and 3 operating systems without having to use more hardware than is absolutely necessary!

UPDATE: Adding Ubuntu to the mix was actually fairly easy. Once I got the app installed it was just a matter of creating a session that auto starts it when the OS boots up and wallah, 4 screens, 3 OS and 1 Keyboard and Mouse.

LASIK

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

So as many of you may or may not already know I had a Lasik procedure done on my eyes this week. Monday afternoon at about 12:00 pm I was in the chair looking up at some very bright lights after having had multiple numbing drops put in my eyes. My mother (who drove me home from my appt, thank you mom) was in a chair near by because she was interested in seeing the procedure first-hand.

As the doctors began the procedure I was a bit nervous of course, but the Valium they gave me helped to calm those nerves. After about 10 minutes the whole thing was done and I was given instructions for care and sent home.

Once home I did as told and slept from about 2pm till nearly 6pm with clear eye patches tapped to my face to keep from rubbing my eyes. the feeling right after surgery is similar to putting a contact in your eye that has a tear in it. Fairly annoying but not too uncomfortable. The tough part is that you are SUPER sensitive to light and the numbing drops makes it tough to really keep your eyes from watering.

Around 6:30pm Elise and the kids got home and I was awake enough to hang out with them and eat some dinner. At about 9 or so everyone was in bed and I took some Tylenol Simple Sleep since having a 3.5 hour nap was going to keep me from falling asleep again at 9:30pm. Woke up early Tuesday morning like any other day, helped Elise and the kids get off to school/work and I headed in to the doctor’s office for a 7:30am follow-up.

Driving down the highway in moderate traffic was a breeze and I was astonished by how incredibly clear everything was, even after only 16 or 17 hours since my surgery. Still a bit sensative to light I just made sure I had my sun glasses on and everything was great. My appointment took all of about 10 minutes and the doctor said I was currently seeing at 20/15 and that everything looked perfect. I scheduled my 1 week follow-up and was on my way home.

Since I had the day off I was able to really see how things in my new visual world (sans glasses or contacts) was like. I found myself looking around and trying to find signs far enough away that I couldn’t read them anymore and that was pretty tough. The rest of the day was like any other day with contacts and I felt completely normal.

I still have to sleep with the clear eye patches taped to my face. I find that the Tylenol Simply Sleep helps me sleep more comfortable with those on too but everything else is pretty much as it was before the surgery. The real advantage was when I realized I could put away my contact lens case and solution in the bathroom. Also, since my regular every-day glasses were originally Ray Ban sunglasses with clear prescription lenses in them I had the doctors office replace those lenses with the original sun glass lenses. I now have a very nice, brand-new pair of sun glasses too.

the lasting affects of the surgery are fairly minor. I have to put 3 sets of drops in my eyes for the next week 4 times a day. No physical exertion (no going to the gym or swimming) and no lifting more than 50 pounds (sorry Lily). After the first week I still can’t work out or go swimming but I can lift my little (big) girl again and I only have to continue with the regular artificial tears drops (down to 4 drops per day from 1 bottle). After 3 weeks I can again go to the gym, go swimming and do normal activities but still can’t rub my eyes, the last item on the check list. After 3-4 months my eyes should be fully healed and I can once again rub them (amazing how much such a simple activity like that is missed when you can’t do it).

Today (Wednesday) I was back at work sitting in front of a computer and just having to remind myself that the artificial tears are cheap compared to the priceless value of my eyes and to use them often. In addition I need to remember to step away form my monitors every 15-20 minutes and let my eyes focus on something other than the screens. Besides that, the light no longer bothers me, my sight is doing great and I tend to get less eye-ache since my vision isn’t being artificially corrected by contacts or glasses.

That’s about all there is to tell. I can’t wait to see how many other things I realize I was missing out on as the days, weeks and months progress with my new-found vision.

New Ride

Monday, April 28th, 2008

So as most people know my ’92 CBR 600 F2 has seen better days. I love the F2, it fits me great, has plenty of power and doesn’t look like it’s from the early 90′s unlike may other sport bikes from that time period. However, it has seen better days and it was time to look at why I ride and how I ride.

I’m not an extremely aggressive rider and at my stage in life and with a wife and 2 kids, the last 2 years were fun with the CBR, but stressful for my wife and in the end it “was a good run”.

So, this last Saturday we headed over to Grand Prix Motorsports to check out their inventory. What I found was what I had been looking for. They had a great looking ’02 Honda Shadow Spirit 750. This bike is in immaculate condition with a few upgrades. The previous owner had added drag bars, Vance & Hines exhaust, saddle bags, windscreen and a custom seat. Everything I wanted to find in a bike except for a custom paint job, guess I’ll just have to do that myself.

So, we traded in my sport-bike for the cruiser, grabbed some new boots and a new helmet. I looked over every inch of the bike yesterday and I couldn’t find a single flaw anywhere with the exception of a small scuff on the right handle grip where it looks like it got too close to a garage wall or something. In other words, this thing is in near factory shape without pulling apart the engine to inspect it.

I will upload more pics I took with my Nikon this evening, but for now this iPhone pic will have to do….

My new ride

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

I absolutely love my new 2008 Audi A3 S-Line. This car is a blast to drive, looks great and handles even better. I will be posting pics soon as well as just blogging about it and DIY tips that I decide to do to it over time. Untill then, here’s a pic from some promotional material I found online.

Lily’s First Loose Tooth!

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

I guess I’m a whole lot more excited than she is. She was afraid to say she had a loose tooth because she didn’t understand that it’s part of growing up and is supposed to happen. She had thought she did something wrong so we had to explain to her that it’s a good thing, it’s part of growing up and this is quite a big milestone!

We are pretty excited for her and we’ll keep everyone updated with news as the progresses.

Finally a site update!

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Yeah, I know, failing in my own task to update the site regularly. I have finally moved all my pics from my old site to this new one (see left nav for URL). Sorry for those in the general public but the photo gallery is private and if you feel you are one of the family or friends that didn’t get a login then please feel free to contact me and request access.

I have also started a new job (5 weeks ago) as you can see from the front page of my site.

More pics (updated new pics) will be posted soon, I promise!

A lot has happened over the last few weeks

Monday, June 11th, 2007

I have all but recovered from my surgery, but now the pain of the hospital bills is setting in. I have yet to return to normal activity since I have yet to begin climbing again, hopefully after a few other life items (keep reading) settle down I will pick it up again.

A few items of great importance to note:

I have given my letter of resignation to Merkle|Quris. It was one of the hardest decisions I have had to make in a long time. I was faced with the decision after being offered a job by 5280 Mobile, a mobile website developer. Basically they create websites to be viewed on mobile phones, a huge market internationally and one that is growing fast in the States as well.

I was a really torn between the new position and staying with M|Q. 50% of my decision was money driven and the other 50% was due to the fact that my position at M|Q will be changing over the next few months and there’s no set path that that change will follow. On one hand I had the opportunity to create the new role, on the other hand the role could very likely become more client facing, something I was not looking forward to.

I gave M|Q 3 weeks notice and this week (6/11) is week number 3, Friday the 15th will be my last day at M|Q

The other major change in my (our) lives is that my wife gave her notice just today. She is giving her employer 3 weeks notice as well. She really wants to spend some quality time with our daughter over the next 2 months preparing her for going to kindergarten in the fall. I can’t wait to see what I hope will be a major transformation in her development.

Additionally, with this 2 months off my wife plans to work on next stage in her career. She hasn’t yet decided if she wants to open her own business or not but I feel that is the path that she is on. She’s been in her field of work for 15 years now and I know she’d be successful doing it on her own.

I will be working a lot harder on keeping this updated once I have got settled into my new job and since the company I am moving to is a Mac Shop I am sure I’ll have plenty of frustration to vent since I have been a PC guy for the last 20+ years…this will be a fun ride so keep reading!

Back to Work

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Glad to announce that mornings are now doable without the Vicodin. I took a few Advil instead and that seemed to do the trick without causing any light-headieness or other side-affects. Work was pretty productive and it felt good getting back into the swing of every day life.

That’s all for today.
