Do you use Firefox (you should)?
Do you do a lot of copy/past?
Well I do both and one of the most annoying things I have found may not be specific to Firefox but maybe more to Windows as a whole. What I hate is when I double-click on a word and if there’s a space after it instead of punctuation it’ll highlight that space as well. Well, since I do a lot of testing online banking systems and I have lots of test accounts (note; dummy accounts) I have to constantly grab usernames and passwords from my tasks to login and test my changes.
One of the more annoying things that I deal with probably dozens of times per day is when an Account Manager enters the info like this:
User/PIN
12345 / 67890
Instead of like this:
User/PIN
12345/67890
Double clicking on the 12345 will highlight the numbers and the space following and then you have to shift-left arrow to unselect the space. Sure, I could just click and drag to highlight it, but wiht as many times as I do this on a daily basis that just doesn’t make sense and is a waste of time.
What really brought this to my attention was watching one of our network engineers the other day use his linux machine (I’m jealous he gets to use linux) and Firefox. He was doing the same thing I do but I noticed it only highlighted the numbers and not the space. So I dedicated some time today to figuring out a solution for this.
Finally, after multiple Google search phrase attempts (this one worked: “selecting text with firefox extra space”), multiple pages of search results I found this little tidbit:

Double clicking a word
Double clicking a word will highlight that word. It also highlights the space immediately after the word which you may or may not find annoying. Personally, I don’t like this because I often like to highlight words to link and having the link extend an extra space past the word just doesn’t look nice. Fortunately, you can turn off this feature by editing a variable in your Firefox configuration. Simply type about:config in your address bar and change the following variable from true to false:layout.word_select.eat_space_to_next_word
My life is now sane again!!
Well damn, it’s about time! I’m a child of the Internet, not like my kids generation will be, but I spend a lot of time online. Many of thet ech blogs I read, Lifehacker posts I review and all around “in the know” people I converse with online all live, love and shop at IKEA. I had always wondered how readily available their products were to people in the US considering it’s a Sweedish company and I knew that it was HUGE in Europe. Well, until I saw one outside of the Mall of America while on a business trip I didn’t even know there was one in the States! then I found out they’re all over America, just not in our great state of Colorado…until now!
